2 Software Resources

I have selected the following software resources for use with K-1 students.

1. Funkymum
  • Grades: K-1
  • Subject: Math
  • Platform: Both (Must have flash player 6)
  • Review: Students practice basic number facts. When a correct answer is chosen a dancing mummy appears. It is pretty straight forward and requires very little explanation. The site does not require any type of registration, nor does it ask for any personal information from the user. It is meant to be used individually. Teacher intervention is not necessary. It is somewhat engaging, but could get boring if played for an extended period of time. There are some ads on the page, but the game can be played with the ads out of sight. No special equipment is needed. It is appropriate for the stated grade levels.
2. Learn To Read
  • Grades: K-1
  • Subject: Reading
  • Platform: Both
  • Review: Students practice basic reading skills. It is an extension of Starfall Reading and Writing Journal. Students progress through the activities in a structured order. It begins with level 1 and allows the student to continue on to different levels. Instruction and prompts are given with voice narratives and animations. It is engaging and requires little or no teacher intervention. It can be used individually or with several students on individual computers, simultaneously for group practice. No login or registration is required. This is an ad free site. It is appropriate for the stated grade levels.
3. Moon Challenge
  • Grades: K-2
  • Subject: Reading
  • Platform: Both
  • Review: Students complete the calendar by placing moons in the correct places in the lunar cycle. Most days are filled in already. There is a voice narrative to guide the student. The activity has three levels and a certificate of completion can be printed at the end. There are no ads. No registration or personal information is requested. It is best used individually. It seemed engaging and useful in teaching the moon cycles. Appropriate for the stated grade levels. Some teacher help may be necessary for younger students. Would work well as a supplement to an in class lesson plan.
